It’s not 2001 for David Duval at the British Open

If you thought Rory McIlroy’s opening hole at the 2019 British Open was bad, David Duval *wishes* he ended up with a quadruple bogey at No. 7 at Royal Portrush.

The man who won the Open Championship in 2001 carded a 14 on that hole, nine strokes over par. He took two different shots from the tee – and then hit the wrong ball when he took the third shot. He figured out on the green that he had made the mistake, went back to find the correct ball… and couldn’t.

Duval then had to start all over again and complete the hole, and he did it in six shots – good for a combined score of 14 once his penalties are applied.

After finishing the round at 20-over, he said ‘it is one of those godawful nightmare scenarios that happened today, and I happened to be on the end of it.”
