I have just reduced my house price to £500,000, just as you report that the “Average price of a home in London hits £500,000 as boom continues” (29 October). It has six bedrooms, four reception rooms, four bathrooms, two main staircases, cellars, a garage, a summerhouse and one acre of south-facing landscaped gardens. Surrounded by countryside, it is neighbour to an English Heritage mansion and gardens. It’s 20 minutes from the BBC Food Programme’s market of the year. It’s about an hour to both the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. It’s an hour and three-quarters to London: a commute I did at least weekly till retirement. As someone who left London 15 years ago, I have no sympathy for those who could relocate if they wanted to, but choose not to.
