'It's like losing a limb': Reverend Richard Coles reflects on grief six months after his partner's death

Confirmed: Reverend Richard Coles (Picture: Ian West/PA)

Reverend Richard Coles has shared a moving reflection on grief, six months after the death of his partner David.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star, who is also well-known thanks to his time in The Communards, revealed his response to the question of how he is coping in light of David’s death.

Coles, 58, tweeted: “Someone, kindly, asked me if I’m getting over it [his death]. No.

“It’s not that sort of thing. It’s more like losing a limb. You adapt, rather than recover. And limp.”

Fans soon shared their support for Coles, with many posting their personal stories and pieces of advice:

David died after a period of long illness in December.

In the months since, Coles has often spoken openly about grief and in March, he discussed how difficult it has been to reimagine his future without David by his side.

“I’ve had to subtract David from the future and that has taken all the future with it,” he told the Guardian.

“It’s a bit blank. I think: ‘What the f*** am I going to do? Play the accordion and go to bed at 10 past six, I guess. Of course, it’s not the end of my life.

“But it feels like it’s over sometimes.”
