'It's like a warzone' - Leith locals react to Edinburgh tram works on Constitution Street

A picture has emerged that shows the true extent of the work in place to extend trams from Edinburgh City Centre to Newhaven.

The recent image shows the street in Leith wide open, exposing a number of different coloured pipes, tubes, and building equipment items.

When the image was shared on local community group "I Love Leith" with the caption, "Oh dear" - many locals were shocked at how much of a "mess' the site looked, with one person even calling it a "disaster". Several people also said that electricity cables, water and gas pipes aren't supposed to be "crammed" so close to each other.

The building work photo comes shortly after pictures of human skeletons being uncovered during the works also emerged at the Constitution Street site.

The most recent picture of the dug up Leith Street attracted over 100 comments, with people holding a heated debate about the image: some people said it looked chaotic and that the utilities you can see in the photo looked like they had been 'crammed together' with no separation, adding that it is "a disaster waiting to happen."

Another man also referenced the different types of pipes and cabling, saying: "The red ones look like high voltage cables, the yellow ones are gas, the blue ones are water. There's gonny be an almighty f**k up if a water pipe bursts and there's a kink in the HV leccy cable. These services should all be segregated with enough space between them. Doesn't look like that at the moment."

A third fumed: "Another fine mess to fix and when the tourists don't come and the students do everything online...this will be a waste of money."

But not everyone agreed that the work being done was a bad thing, with one local saying: "Looks pretty decent, making good progress considering the site was closed for months."

A second added: "You complain about the bodies all week now complaining about the pipes.

"Away aff the Facebook and get some fresh air."

Someone else said: "perhaps I'm just boring but it's kinda fascinating to see all the stuff that runs under our streets."

And finally, one man simply summed up the entire argument by saying: "Get a grip. It's just some pipes."
