'It's in the hands of the Premier League': Mike Ashley's takeover update to Newcastle squad

Mike Ashley addressed the Newcastle United squad via a Zoom conference call after the club's 3-1 defeat against Liverpool.

In it, he claimed that the takeover situation - which has now dragged on for four months - was still in the hands of the Premier League and he could not offer any guidance on the situation.

The address is believed to have been broadcast from the United States and Steve Bruce revealed after the game he would speak to Ashley again next week.

He said: "Yes (it was via Zoom), it was with all the squad, all the staff and everybody concerned.

"He wanted to say ‘well done' to the staff and players for tall their hard work. He wanted to thank the staff and players for all their efforts."

Bruce then added: "I have another call in with Mike on Wednesday."

Ashley is believed to be as keen as anybody for an answer on the takeover.

He said: "What he reiterated was it's in the hands of the Premier League and it's been like that for weeks. We need a decision and one quickly.

"How long do we need to make that decision?

"All I want is what's best for this great club.

"If new owners come in and take the club forward that's what we all want as Newcastle fans."
