'It's great to see everyone back out': Manchester comes to a standstill for England's Euros clash with Germany

Greater Manchester has come to a standstill tonight for England's eagerly anticipated clash with Germany in Euro 2020.

There was heavy traffic on many of the region's roads as people rushed to finish work and get home in time for the 5pm kick off.

Pubs and bars are expecting their biggest trading day of the year, even though they are still having to operate under coronavirus restrictions.

It means there are no venues where England fans are able to gather in large crowds.

But their are some outdoor screening events where fans can sit in tables of up to six.

At EventCity in Stretford fans were waiting with excitement this afternoon.

Connor Hartigan, 18, said: “The atmosphere is mint. It’s great to see everyone back out and be back in a crowd. I don’t care what the score is just as long as England win.”

Manchester United fan Stefan Hameed, 31, from Burnage said: “It’s really nice, especially cos it’s all England fans. It’s a really good atmosphere. I just hope England aren’t too defensive, but if they win I’ll be happy.”

England are vying for a place in the quarter-finals.

But they will have to beat Germany in the knock-out stages of a tournament for the first time since 1966.
