'It’s going to get hot and humid': Greater Manchester set for 24C heat following heavy rain and thunderstorm alerts

There is finally some sunny weather heading for Greater Manchester - and it should arrive by this afternoon.

The region has been plagued by heavy rain at the start of this week, with yellow weather alerts in place for heavy rain and thunderstorms.

But forecasters have said the rain showers should clear later on today, making way for sunny skies.

The rain is expected to clear by around 1pm - and from then onwards it is expected to remain dry until the weekend.

On Wednesday morning there will be some low cloud around, which will lift and thin as the day progresses.

This will be followed by sunny spells and light winds.

The outlook for Thursday and Friday is more or less the same, with dry conditions and sunny spells forecast.

Temperatures are also going to be hot and humid.

Today there will be highs of around 20C and tomorrow temperatures will rise to around 23C (Manchester Evening News)

Today there will be highs of around 20C and tomorrow temperatures will rise to around 23C.

By the end of the week there could be highs of around 24C.

Heat wave alerts have been issued by the Met Office for Southern areas in the UK, but the North West has not been included.

It comes as good news for Glastonbury ticket holders who look set to avoid a mudbath and a heatwave this year.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Dan Suri, said: “It’s going to get hot and humid for some from Wednesday, with the highest temperatures expected across southern and western parts of the UK.  Not everywhere will see the high temperatures, however, as an easterly breeze will keep North Sea coasts much cooler.

“By the time we get to Saturday, however, North Sea coasts will join much of the rest of eastern UK in seeing temperatures of 27 to 32 Celsius.”

Dan continued: “Heatwave thresholds will therefore be met across some parts of the UK later this week and into the weekend.”

Commenting on the humidity, Dan said: “It’ll feel very muggy for many this week, especially overnight as temperatures are likely to stay into the high teens and possibly low 20s Celsius in urban areas.”

Fresh air is expected to arrive from the west on Saturday, bringing an end to the hot spell.

There could also be the potential for thundery showers arriving later.

The Met Office said temperatures are also rising across large parts of Europe this week.

If you are planning trips to France and Spain make sure to pack suncream as temperatures will be around the mid-30C in some places, rising to low 40C.
