It’s going to be hilarious if the Yankees don’t win the World Series this year

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The New York Yankees have been the favorites to win the World Series this year basically since the first day of spring training.

They’ve since been the best team in baseball and currently have the most wins.

They have a fella named Aaron Judge who is looking to become the first player in the American League since Roger Maris to hit 60 home runs or more in a season.

And it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if they win their first title since 2009 (which was a very long time ago).

But my goodness, wouldn’t it be hilarious if they fell short once again? This team built with tons of cash has everything that it takes to win and their fans are rightfully demanding nothing less than a 28th World Series title. But as we all know – sure things in baseball aren’t always a sure thing.

I say all this because I’m guessing Yankees fans are pressing the panic button a bit this morning after their team just lost back-to-back games to the Mets at Citi Field. The atmosphere in those games was playoff-like and it showed again that this vaunted Yankees team can absolutely be beat.

This Yankees team also kicked off the second half of the season last week by losing back-to-back games to the AL West-leading Astros, who will be a tough team to get through in the playoffs.

While Yankees fans might be worried, the team quickly took care of some business off the field last night when they traded a few minor leaguers to Kansas City for outfielder Andrew Benintendi. The lefty, who won a World Series with the Red Sox back in 2018, is hitting .320 this season and should be another very good part to put into an already stacked team.

The rich just got a little bit richer.

The rich also just put a lot more pressure on themselves because there’s just no way this team can do anything but win a World Series this year or the season will be one of the biggest busts in MLB history.

And all the baseball fans that don’t root for the Yankees will be laughing pretty hard if that happens.

Quick hits: Best eephus pitch ever… Carlos Rodon’s ridiculous play… Pujols hands ump his necklace… And more.

– A pitcher in the Japanese league threw the most beautiful eephus pitch for a called strike.

– Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon used his foot to make a mind-blowing play that had MLB fans in awe.

– Albert Pujols handed the ump his necklace during an at-bat at MLB fans had jokes.

– Baker Mayfield had a quick message for a fan who brought a Browns jersey to the Panthers’ training camp.
