Looking out your window and seeing a wall of flourishing pink roses sounds like a dream, but making it a reality is simpler than you might think
Charlie's Angels actress Jaclyn Smith demonstrated the innovative method for planting climbing roses in a recent Instagram video.
She explains: 'I am so proud of my roses. These roses are climbing roses, each year they get more beautiful, and they're David Austin roses. The scent's as beautiful as they look, and it's like a wall of roses. So when I'm having breakfast in my breakfast room, I look out and I see a wall of pink roses.'
Her lesson in how to plant roses is a method favored by gardening experts.
Master gardener and gardens content editor at Homes & Gardens, Thom Rutter, explains: 'Climbing roses can really elevate and transform backyards. Whether wrapped around garden archways or trained over pergolas, the heady scent of romantic roses is game-changing.'

With the right tools, recreating Jaclyn's rose care and growing is simple. Here are a few of our favorites.
Rosa 'Paint the Town' has gorgeous big flower heads that rebloom for months. Add a bold splash of red to your landscape from late spring through the first frost of fall with a rose that stays compact and tight.
This starting solution is an expert-approved fertilizer preference, and we can see why: the liquid plant food can be used with seedlings, flowers, vegetables, trees, and other plants when planting or transplanting.
A strong digging spade with a solid forged carbon steel head and socket and weatherproofed hardwood shaft - ideal for digging holes to plant perennials.
Thom advises: 'There are many different rose varieties to choose from, but two of my favorites are "The Generous Gardener" and "Gertrude Jekyll," classic English climbing roses that have a pleasing pink color and floral scent.'
Taking care of these roses requires attention to watering and frequent pruning.
Thom recommends: 'Whatever variety you pick, just be sure to water well when you plant, for either plants in the ground or in pots. And, deadheading and feeding roses is essential to keep them blooming for as long as possible.'
Jaclyn Smith is demonstrating that roses can be more than just a plant; they can also be a source of infinite joy in the yard. When we design with these plants in the right way, they truly are, as Thom said, a game-changer.
