'It’s disparaging' - Ronald Koeman takes aim at Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp over Real Madrid claim

Ronald Koeman has taken aim at Jurgen Klopp’s comments about Real Madrid’s Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

The Red boss appeared to take issue with the stadium in his post-match press conference following Tuesday’s game in the Spanish capital.

A brace from Vinicius Junior, either side of a goal from Marco Asensio, handed Real a 3-1 win over the Reds on Tuesday night.

The game was played at Madrid's 6,000-seat Di Stefano Stadium, inside their Valdebebas training base, rather than their famous Santiago Bernabeu home.

The Bernabeu is currently undergoing extensive renovations with the club taking advantage of the current coronavirus-induced ban on spectators enabling them to accelerate their project which includes building a retractable roof.

Work had originally been planned to finish in the summer of 2022 but club president Florentino Perez announced last June it had begun ahead of schedule.

But speaking after his side’s defeat, Klopp claimed returning to a proper stadium in the shape of Anfield next week would help his side in the second-leg of the tie.

He said: "This here tonight was really strange because it was a difficult situation in the stadium, but Anfield is at least a proper stadium and that will be good for us."

Zidane, though, was unmoved with Klopp's comments, saying: "I don't have an opinion about what Jurgen says, we are proud to play in this stadium."

Real face arch-rivals Barcelona at the Di Stefano Stadium tomorrow night in the latest edition of El Clásico.

And speaking ahead of the game, Koeman not only responded to Klopp’s claims, but claimed the German’s comments were 'disparaging to a big club like Madrid'.

He said: "Madrid are used to playing on that pitch and the opponents have to play there, and that’s that. For players the tough thing is playing without any fans."

Before the Dutchman continued: "It’s disparaging to a big club like Madrid (to say it is a training pitch).

“They’ve chosen the time to do renovation works at their stadium and they’ve chosen well."
