'It's Coming Home' mural appears in Ouseburn ahead of Euro 2020 final on Sunday

A mural honouring the England football team’s success has appeared in Newcastle ahead of the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.

The artwork, featuring the popular chant "It's Coming Home," has been painted on a wall on Ouseburn’s Maling Street, near the Tyne Bar.

It is the latest creation of Newcastle-based artist Mul, whose other work includes the much photographed Young Hearts Run Free mural on the Quayside, and a new ‘Free Britney’ artwork in Heaton.

It comes as football fever has gripped the nation ahead of the Three Lions' participation in the European Championship final against Italy.

Victory at Wembley would mark the men's football team's first major tournament win since the 1966 World Cup.

Football anthems have flooded the charts, with the song that spawned the now familiar chant, Three Lions (Football's Coming Home) by Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds, zooming up into the top five.

Employers and school heads are considering allowing staff and pupils, respectively, to enjoy a lie-in on Monday.

It comes as momentum for a national day off in the event of glory continues to grow - though police have warned fans not to get carried away by the occasion.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has wished the national men's team the "very best" ahead of the final, but said granting a bank holiday would be "tempting fate".

And supermarkets are preparing for a sales bonanza this weekend as Britons get set to spend an estimated £563 million in preparation for the final.

More than seven million Britons are expected to splash out £180 million in hospitality venues alone on Sunday - a 12.5% increase from Wednesday's semi-final against Denmark, according to a report by Vouchercodes.co.uk and the Centre for Retail Research (CRR).

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) predicts England fans will buy 7.1 million pints on Sunday.

A Liberal Democrat peer has even called for a statue of Gareth Southgate next to Boudica in Westminster if he leads England to Euro 2020 glory.
