It’s Clear You Should Watch ‘What If…?’ Before ‘Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness’

Captain Carter Disney Plus

Marvel just can’t help itself, and keeps showing more and more clips from Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness ahead of its release early next month. The latest offering shows Scarlet Witch fighting Captain Carter:

Wait, who?

Alright, if you haven’t done it yet, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is making it clear that you should watch the Disney Plus animated series, What If…? before you head to theaters.

Already before this, it’s obvious you should watch WandaVision, given that it sets up how Wanda gets her Scarlet Witch form for this movie. And you may want to watch Loki, which is about how the multiverse got cracked open in the first place. But now it’s pretty clear that Doctor Strange is also drawing characters into live action from What If…? the multiverse-based animated series.

Captain Carter is confirmed, who will no doubt be actress Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in the Captain America movies and also voices Carter in What If…? Her story imagines a world where by some mishap, Peggy gets the super soldier serum instead of Steve, and her story is woven throughout a few different episodes of What If…? which culminates in a battle against Ultron who has gotten the Infinity Stones instead of Thanos.

Strange Supreme Disney Plus

Doctor Strange also makes it clear that the evil, corrupted variant of Doctor Strange, Strange Supreme, is a major force in the movie, and he was in What If…? as well, assuming it’s the same multiverse-based version of the character. In the show, Strange summons and absorbs countless demons and horrors to get the power to try to bring his lost love Christine back, which again, seems like it may be part of Multiverse of Madness as well, though I don’t think we’d see a 1:1 recap of that What If…? episode in live action. But who knows.

The point is, you really should watch What If…? before you head to theaters if you want more context for these new character variants that are very clearly being introduced. The movie is showing so much in its clips now that these are no longer just leaks and rumors, but confirmations. And, just in case you’re not sure whether What If…? is worth your time, it’s the highest reviewed Disney Plus Marvel series so far, and both critics and fans really loved it. It’s also been renewed for a second season, which should see the return of Captain Carter, among others.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is out on May 6, 2022, so you have until then to catch up if you’re going to be there opening day.
