'It's back!' - The 'Tiny Football Car' sends fans wild on Women's Euro 2022 return

The Women’s Euros 2022 is underway, and fans were particularly delighted to see the return of the famous ‘tiny car’.

England got their tournament underway at Old Trafford as they take on Austria in front of a packed-out Old Trafford. Sarina Wiegman’s side are among the favourites to go all the way to Wembley on July 31 and win their first European Championship.

And the tournament kicked off in style up in Manchester, with a familiar feel to proceedings at Old Trafford. Ahead of kick-off, the match ball was brought out to the referee by a ball carrier made by tournament sponsor Volkswagen.

A miniature version of a VW van brought the ball out to the centre of the pitch in scenes reminiscent of the start of the men’s Euro 2020 last year. Back then, fans were beside themselves with laughter after seeing a tiny car carrying out the same job ahead of the opening game between Italy and Turkey.

And supporters watching on for the opening game of the Women’s Euros this year were delighted to see the return of an old favourite, albeit in a slightly different guise.

The Women’s Euro 2022 is set to run throughout July, with games taking place up and down the country as England take host duties. As well as Austria, the Lionesses will take on Norway and Northern Ireland as they look to navigate their way to the knockout stages.
