‘It’s always either the Diet Coke or iced tea drinkers’: Server shares how she gets revenge on customers who chug their drinks

In a viral video, a server shares the petty way she gets back at customers who annoy her by finishing their drinks too quickly and needing constant refills.

How does she take petty revenge?

In her 23-second video, Cammy Lý (@nguyet__24) says, “I don’t know if any of you other servers do this, but my favorite thing to do is take away people’s ice privileges.”

What does she mean by this? Well, if you chug your drinks one after the other, “the next drink you get will have one ice cube,” she says.

Commenters relate to the server

Viewers who responded to the video shared which types of customers are guilty of drinking too quickly. Others shared what they do to get back at these customers.

“It’s always either the Diet Coke or iced tea drinkers,” user Jazz said about who typically inhales their drinks.

“Shirley temples start getting an absurd amount of grenadine,” user Bradley Samantha said about how she takes revenge.

User Eli said, “I call it ice jail cause how did u finish two drinks before ur app even came out?”

Some were on the chuggers’ side

“I don’t care if they chug their drinks, it’s my job to refill them, as long as they don’t get impatient about refills i’m chill,” user Emily Atkins wrote.

User Jas said, “As a server i only start doing this after the 3rd refill, its legit my job to refill ur cup.”

Is it rude to ask your server for multiple refills?

In a Quora thread about whether it is rude to ask for more than two refills at a sit-down restaurant, the nine respondents generally agreed that no, it was not rude.

They reasoned that if your server is good, you shouldn’t even have to ask. In the U.S., things like water, soda, and iced tea typically come with free refills, and your server should be monitoring your glass to see when you need a refill without you having to ask for one. They say this is true for alcoholic beverages as well. Though these do not typically come with free refills, your server should ask if you want another drink or bottle of wine if you’ve finished yours.

The caveat is that some commenters said you should tip your server accordingly if they are constantly coming over to fill up your drink. One commenter even said that while it was not rude, more than two refills were overkill and would diminish your appetite.

In the r/NoStupidQuestions subreddit, someone similarly asked if it was rude that they asked for eight glasses of water over the course of their meal.

While some thought eight glasses was a little excessive, several agreed that it still wasn’t rude to ask, especially if you tip the server well. However, many said it may have been better to just request a pitcher to save the server some trouble.

When is serving yourself from a pitcher not OK?

The only time it’s acceptable to serve yourself from a pitcher is if that pitcher has been left on your table. In an article about 10 “polite” things you do at restaurants that are actually rude, EatingWell explains that refilling your glass from a nearby pitcher could get your server in trouble.

“Your glass is low, so you help yourself to the pitcher of tea a few steps away,” it states. “If a manager sees you helping yourself, your server is likely to get an earful for not keeping you topped up. Instead, just wave over your server and ask for a refill. If it’s a continuing problem, ask for two glasses or let a manager know that your server is forgetting to refill your drink. It’s always better to voice your concerns rather than try to fix them yourself.”

Lý declined to comment.
