It's against the law to own just one guinea pig in Switzerland because they get so lonely

If you're the proud owner of one solitary guinea pig, then this may make you feel a little guilty.

Switzerland have some rather niche laws around preventing animal cruelty   - which is a good thing.

After all, our pets can't speak for themselves. So, from the smallest goldfish to the biggest dog, they all need us to advocate for them.

But even the most animal-mad of you might be taken aback by Swiss legislation dictating that it's ILLEGAL to own just one guinea pig.

The heartbreaking reason being that guinea pigs are highly social animals, and are proven to need a companion to live happily.

These laws are taken so seriously in Switzerland that there are even companies which will pair the furry critters up with another chum, in case one of their companions dies and leaves them alone.

In fact, forget us Brits being a nation of animal-lovers, for years the Swiss have been quietly carving out a reputation for being fierce animal rights' defenders.

Legislation also decrees that fish must always company in tanks because, in the wild, they swim in shoals.

Not just that, but owners have to use lighting to produce full day/ night cycles for them to mimic their natural environment.

Oh, and you can't boil a lobster alive, a single cat must be allowed outside or able to see other cats from the windows at all times and all would-be dog owners must have practical training before they're allowed to own one.

Switzerland, we're seriously impressed!
