'It's a three mile walk to the nearest shop' - say fed-up villagers who urge council to back shop plans

Fed-up villagers who say they have to walk three miles if they want to "pop to the shop" are urging council bosses to give planning permission for a new store.

Developers want to change the old Penrhiwfer Community Centre in Penrhiwfer, Rhondda Cynon Taf, into a shop and laundrette.

The building, in Ashdale Road, has been derelict for years since it closed.

Plans show the two proposed businesses would be open between 6am and 11pm from Mondays to Saturdays, and between 7am to 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

A petition signed by 63 people supporting the application has been submitted to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council .

"It would be nice not to walk three miles to a stop and it would be a a positive addition to the area," a council document quoted supporters as saying.

However, the council has also received 12 letters objecting to the plans - with those arguing that there was already enough shops in neighbouring villages.

The council's planning committee has recommended that the proposal should not be given planning permission.

It said the scheme would have a "significant impact" on highway safety.

The plans will go before councillors on Thursday, April 4.
