'It's a slap in the face to the NHS' - Manchester Airport passenger's fury after being crowded on to bus 'like cattle' for 20 minutes

Manchester Airport has been criticised after people were packed onto a bus 'like cattle'.

Passengers were being ferried from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1, having arrived from Dublin on Sunday night (14 February).

Pictures show dozens of people crammed tightly together on the bus, with most of the passengers unable to adhere to social distancing measures.

One woman, who had arrived in Manchester due to a family member being 'gravely ill with Covid' said it was a 'slap in the face' to the NHS.

She claimed passengers were left waiting on the bus for 20 minutes with no ventilation, after being informed the doors to the airport were not working.

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said the safety of their customers is 'paramount' and that they had limited the number of people on board airside buses.

All passengers are also required to wear a face covering while on board, they added.

"I can only describe it as a slap in the face to the NHS frontline workers and to those who abide by the Covid recommendations," one passenger said.

"This is what we were subjected to. Crowded onto a bus like cattle from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1, only to be left on a bus for 20 minutes with no ventilation."

"They refused to open the doors and when people wanted to know why, we were informed the doors to the airport were not working.

"Some welcome to the UK, and maybe if this didn't happen we could get life back to normal again."

The woman claimed the emergency button was pushed so passengers could get some air, but this was denied.

Manchester Airport said this was in line with protocol, and that the doors to the bus were not permitted to be opened due to 'safety reasons.'

A spokesperson said: "The safety of our passengers and colleagues is paramount.

"In addition to the safety measures in place across the airport, we have limited the total number of passengers on board our airside buses, and passengers are required to wear a face covering at all times while on board.

"Buses are regularly sanitised between use for the continuing safety of everyone making essential journeys."

Bosses said they had reviewed the flight in question and do not believe there was an 'excessive delay' in disembarking passengers from this particular bus.

They added that whilst social distancing 'may not be possible at all stages of the journey' the airport had introduced a number of additional measures including hand sanitiser stations, safety screens and additional signage.
