'It's a no brainer' - Plans approved for new homes on former Shiremoor pub site

Plans to build houses on the site of a former pub have been approved just weeks after they were thrown out by councillors amid fears they were too small.

Developer SHN Homes originally applied for planning permission to build 13 homes on the site of the Beaumont in Shiremoor .

The site, on Park Lane, has been vacant since the pub was pulled down in 2010.

The scheme was rejected in April by North Tyneside Council's planning committee after councillors learned the houses didn't meet Government space standards.

At the time, the developer hit back at the local authority and claimed that less well-off buyers have missed out on "great homes" as a result.

Now, the council has signed off revised plans to build a mixture of three and two bedroom houses on the site.

The council's planners recommended approval for the scheme, saying it would bring "significant benefits" to the area and pointed out that the applicant has amended the plans so the houses are big enough.

At Tuesday's meeting, the council's planning committee supported the application saying it was needed in the borough and unanimously voted to approve it.

Coun John O'Shea said: "I think this re-submission complies with our policies, we need housing in the borough, it's a derelict site, it's a no brainer."

This was echoed by Coun Muriel Green who said the houses are "desperately" needed.

"We desperately need houses in the borough so I support it as well, and it will get rid of derelict site," she said.

Coun Brian Burdis added: "This site has been a blot and there has been vandalism on the site. There has been rubbish and waste, the neighbours are looking forward to it being redeveloped."
