'It's a nice challenge to have' - Lee Cattermole explains thinking behind VVV Venlo move

Lee Cattermole has explained why he chose to make the move to the Netherlands this summer.

Cattermole left Sunderland via mutual consent earlier this summer and decided to make the move to Eredivisie outfit VVV Venlo on a free transfer.

The former Middlesbrough and Wigan midfielder made his debut for his new side on Sunday, coming off the bench to help 'the Good Old' secure a 2-1 victory away at FC Utrecht.

Cattermole replaced Danny Post in the 73rd minute and made a vital intervention to help his team hold on to a vital three points.

You won't be surprised to hear he also picked up a yellow card but, on the whole, it was a successful debut in a new league.

Cattermole wanted a new experience in a different country before he finished his playing career and explained how this 'nice challenge' could help him in his coaching career.

"I don’t think many players have left England to come to Holland, unless it was home for them but I just think for the opportunity for me and my age, it was a nice challenge to have," he told 1Limburg .

"I could have stayed in England and maybe finish my career but not had the experience of this and that’s a life experience.

"I think when I finish playing football, I might go into coaching or something, so it’s good to see the different styles.

"There was a lot of thought behind it and it just felt right."
