'It's a joke': Hundreds 'miss kick-off due to First Bus' ahead of Bristol Bears v Bath Rugby

More than 300 people were reportedly left waiting for buses to take them to a rugby match due to alleged issues with the First Group service.

Bristol Bears are due to start at 7.45pm today (October 18) at Ashton Gate stadium.

Bears fan Paul Herridge told Bristol Live hundreds of people were stuck at Brislington Park & Ride when First's 6pm bus did not turn up.

He said: "We were there for more than 45 minutes, with more than 300 people waiting. It’s an absolute joke."

First had scheduled buses at 6pm, 6.30pm and 7pm, but the first of those did not arrive and there was not enough capacity for everyone on the later ones, Mr Herridge claims.

Speaking shortly after 7pm, he said: "We've just got on a bus. We were waiting at the Park & Ride from 5.55pm. We were phoning and phoning First to see what was going on.

"There are still about 100 people waiting. Even those of us who're on the bus already are likely to miss kick-off.

"This was a present from my wife for my 40th birthday. The kids haven’t had food. It's just a joke.

"Many people ended up driving from the Park & Ride, and all week long First have been promoting their Park & Ride service to avoid the traffic."

Mr Herridge, who is with his wife, child and friends, said he did not expect to make the start of the match.

First Bristol's director of operations Ian Coyle said later in the evening: “Four bus services were in operation this evening to take customers to the Bristol Bears rugby match at Ashton Gate Stadium.

"While the vast majority of fans had no issues with their journey we would like to sincerely apologise to those customers at Brislington Park and Ride who experienced severe delays due to operational issues with the service.

"All customers arrived at the stadium before match kick-off, but we understand the inconvenience the delays will have caused for those customers this evening.

"We have put on extra buses and deployed additional staff to Ashton Gate Stadium to make sure that all customers will be able to travel home safely and in good time.”
