'It's a dream come true' – this vintage dishware trend is Joanna Gaines-approved, and it's not just for summer

White table with pale blue napkin, white cutlery and a white charger plate with blue and white patterned crockery.

As a lifestyle writer, I’m constantly searching for fresh decor inspiration, yet it’s often the simplest ideas that prove the most striking. A recent styling video from Joanna Gaines was the perfect reminder – and it all centers on vintage blue-and-white tableware.

In the clip, Joanna demonstrates a masterclass in decorating with vintage ceramics, layering pieces to create a look that feels both eclectic and effortlessly elegant. Blue-and-white china wasn’t on my radar for fall table decor, but after seeing her approach, I can’t wait to bring the idea to my own table.

Embracing the country-grandmother aesthetic with her signature modern twist, Joanna Gaines’ vintage tableware hack brings a layer of timeless chic to any table – perfect for mixing with more contemporary pieces.

‘I love blending old with new,’ Joanna explains in the video. ‘Mismatched blue-and-white vintage dishware is a dream come true – with so many patterns from different eras, you can layer them together, and the result is absolutely gorgeous.’

When styling modern table décor alongside vintage pieces, I always keep the principles of transitional design in mind – carefully blending elements from different eras.

‘The beauty of blue-and-white dishware is the many makers you can find on the shelves of your local thrift store or flea market,’ says Eleanor Richardson, our Interior Design News Writer. ‘The sheer variety of patterns and sizes makes it an easy (and surprisingly affordable) way to bring life to your table – but remember to layer in softer elements like placemats or an embroidered tablecloth to create the perfect backdrop for your china.’

If I were creating a Joanna Gaines-inspired tablescape, I’d mix silhouettes and patterns for a whimsical effect, while sticking to a narrow range of blue shades to maintain cohesion. Sleek taper candles and subtle gold accents would provide just the right contemporary touch.

In a Magnolia blog post discussing how to style vintage pieces, Joanna herself shares plenty of wisdom on the topic. 'Find items that spark nostalgia or wonder, or keep an eye out for something meaningful from your past,' she advises. 'The most important – and challenging – part of decorating with vintage is balance. Mixing new and old design will make your vintage pieces stand out more, giving them a substantial, storied feel.'

Joanna has inspired me to hunt down blue and white tableware at flea markets and thrift stores, but I'm also looking out for vintage-style pieces from my favorite brands. I'm coveting this Oxford Flamingo Blue Willow Porcelain Dinnerware Set from Wayfair, and this floral-inspired Botanical Transferware Dinner Plate from Terrain. Shop more below.
