'It's a disgrace' - Tottenham star Gareth Bale's agent warns he'll take legal action if Wales skipper is banned from Euros

Gareth Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett says he will pursue legal action if players involved in the upcoming Super League are prevented from appearing for their national teams.

The row over the controversial so-called Super League has continued to escalate since news of its inception first broke on Sunday.

A total of 12 teams have signed up for the proposed new tournament, which has been met with almost universal outrage from fans and pundits, many of whom believe it will have an overwhelmingly negative impact on the rest of the English game.

Bale's parent club Real Madrid and his loan team Tottenham are part of the breakaway group.

UEFA, which only recently announced sweeping changes to the Champions League, is unsurprisingly concerned about the impact such a rival tournament will have on what is arguably its flagship tournament.

President Aleksander Ceferin recently reiterated UEFA's stance that any club participating in the new competition would be excluded from their competitions, and added that even the players themselves could be banned from international tournaments, including the upcoming European Championships and World Cup.

That would potentially spell disastrous news for Wales, with Bale one of several star names who would be affected.

However, the 31-year-old's representative believes players are being unfairly targeted by football's authorities during this row, which threatens to cast a state of civil war inside the European game.

Barnett told the BBC: "It's a disgrace. The first thing they talk about is banning players.

"My main concern is, as always, the players and their representatives have not been consulted about this.

"And right away people like FIFA and UEFA are threatening to ban them.

"The new Super League is saying there's going to be salary caps.

"The only people who are really going to suffer inside the business are the players, and that's completely unacceptable."

And, should UEFA follow up on its promise to ban players from international competition, Barnett insists he's prepared to take legal action.

He added: "Anything that affects players, and I've been speaking to FIFPro, the European Union of players, I assure you, we will go to court to fight for the rights of the players."

Indeed, the dispute between UEFA and Europe's collection of rebel clubs seems destined to end up in the courts, with neither side seemingly showing any willingness to back down.

In a scathing attack on the plans, UEFA chief Ceferin said: "I cannot stress more strongly UEFA and the footballing world are united against the disgraceful, self-serving proposals we have seen, fuelled purely by greed. It’s a nonsense of a project.

"This idea is a spit in the face for all footballer lovers and our society. We will not allow them to take this away from us."

"We will take all the sanctions that we can… and we will inform you as soon as we have a clear answer. My opinion is that, as soon as possible, the players have to be banned from all our competitions."
