'It's a bulky neighbour': Norwegian man wakes to find huge container ship in garden

A man in Norway awoke to find a huge container ship had run aground in his front garden.

Johan Helber had been sound asleep when the 135m ship missed his house by metres at around 5am local time on Thursday.

Pictures show how close the ship came to crashing directly into Mr Helber’s home in Trondheim.

He was only awoken when a neighbour rushed to the house to check on him.

“The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don't like to open,” he told the Guardian.

“I went to the window and was quite astonished to see a big ship.”

"I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal."

"Five metres further south and it would have entered the bedroom," he told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. "I didn't hear anything."

There were 16 crew members onboard the Cyprus-registered ship, including Norwegians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians and Russians, according to the Guardian.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, but there is currently no suspicion that anyone on board was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

No one was injured in the incident.

Mr Helberg added: "It's a very bulky new neighbour but it will soon go away."

The head of NCL, which chartered the ship, told the BBC that it was a "serious incident" and "we are grateful that nobody was injured".

Managing director Bente Hetland told the broadcaster: "At present time, we do not know what caused the incident and are awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing investigation by the relevant authorities.”
