It's a boy, and a bushfire: Video shows moment gender reveal party ignites 47,000 acres

The US Forest Service has released a video of the moment a gender reveal party went seriously wrong.

The party took place last year on April 23 and was meant to reveal the gender of the host couple's soon-to-arrive baby, but the explosive reveal instead set fire to the surrounding area, causing a 47,000-acre wildfire and damages worth millions of dollars.

The clip that was shot in Green Valley, Arizona, shows a makeshift target with the words "boy" and "girl" in an area of remote scrubland.

As a gunshot rings out — apparently fired by expectant father and US border patrol agent Dennis Dickey — the target explodes in a blue cloud, igniting the surrounding area in flames.

A voice off camera shouts: "Start packing up."

The target had been filled with blue powder and explosive substance Tannerite.

CNN reported the fire spread through the Coronado National Forest and took firefighters from 20 agencies a week to contain.

Mr Dickey reported the fire and pleaded guilty to starting it, and was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to pay $US8 million in restitution.
