'It's a blatant push': Match of the Day verdict on Newcastle United and Lee Mason

Jermaine Jenas said Newcastle United were denied a clear penalty as he reviewed Steve Bruce’s litany of refereeing complaints in their 2-1 defeat to Everton.

against the Toffees but Bruce was far from happy with official Lee Mason.

He felt Mason missed a push on Miguel Almiron after 30 seconds, then got a corner decision very wrong in the build up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s opener.

Finally, Newcastle were denied a penalty in the closing stages when Andy Carroll clashed with Djibril Sidibé in the box.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Jenas felt one decision was correct and two were wrong (with only one having a material impact on the match).

Jenas said: “I think it’s a mixed bag. I think in the first instance with Almiron, he wanted him to go down but I don’t think there’s enough in that personally. I think he’s got to stay on his feet and finish it.

“With the (Moises) Kean header, he’s right - that’s a goal kick. But there was another corner and a free-kick after that which came before the goal.

“The Andy Carroll incident is, in my opinion, is a penalty. Sidibe is not even looking to go for the ball. It’s a blatant push on Carroll. If the referee had given it, VAR wouldn’t have turned it down.”
