'It's a bit of a low blow': Food bank broken into for third time in the space of 14 months

The manager of a food bank has been left reeling after it was targeted by burglars for the third time in just over a year.

Farnworth and Kearsley Food Bank, which operates from Farnworth Baptist Church, was ransacked in March and November 2020.

This time, burglars smashed through a window and several doors, before stealing a laptop.

Manager Mark Whittington recorded an emotional video and posted it to Facebook this morning (May 13).

"It's just really gutting," he said.

"I'm pretty sure everyone in the community knows the work we do here and yet people are still trying to get what little we have in here."

Other community schemes also run from the church, including a jobs club, a befriending project and a health and wellbeing drop-in service.

Mr Whittington described the latest break-in as a 'low blow'.

He added: "We've improved our security but it's the same pattern.

"A laptop was stolen and that was it thankfully, but it's the hassle, the mess, the frustration.

"No one got caught the previous two times and it's not looking positive for this.

"It was caught on CCTV but they were wearing face masks so they're not very identifiable at all. They obviously knew what they were doing and I think it's probably the same people that have done it before.

"It's a bit of a low blow that someone would want to take from a charity."

The Manchester Evening News has approached Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for comment.
