Every dog owner in an urban area well knows the gross, vaguely humiliating ritual of picking up their dog’s feces. Or at least they should if they’re responsible pet owners who comply with local ordinances.
A Florida woman seems to think she isn’t subject to the same laws as everyone else.
In late June, CC Pond (@cecilypond) posted a TikTok that begins inside the veterinarian’s office where she works. The camera points outside where a woman walking a dog is approaching.
“Is that her?” Pond asks.
“That’s her. That’s the girl whose dog keeps pooping,” an unidentified woman replies. “Go.”
Pond then heads for the door.
Once outside, Pond addresses the woman with the dog.
“Your dog has been coming here for the last three days and you’re not picking up the poop,” she says.
The woman claims that “it’s fine” and says her dog’s feces “fertilizes the grass.”
Pond retorts, “No, it doesn’t fertilize our grass. This is a vet office. If your dog is sick—”
The woman says something else, then Pond offers her a bag. The woman declines, saying, “I don’t want your crappy bag. I got better bags.”
Pond ignores her and walks closer, still brandishing the bag. “You need to be picking up the trash from your dog,” she says.
The two go back and forth a bit about why the woman should be picking up the dog’s poop, such as other animals catching a disease from it or people stepping in it.
The woman is unmoved. As the TikTok ends, she walks away.
‘It’s the LAW’
Pond’s post absolutely stunned her audience. They were most shocked by the audacity of the woman with the dog.
“How can she stand there and argue??” wrote one.
Another said, “It’s more than common courtesy,” referencing something Pond said to the woman, “It’s the LAW.”
“Call cops ????,” a third said. “It’s a 5,000 dollar fine where I live! Like it’s a serious fine.”
People thought it was also disgusting and inconsiderate to repeatedly leave dog poop on someone else’s yard.
“If she thinks it fertilizes the grass then let him do his business in her own yard,” was a common refrain.
Many pointed out that dog poop actually is bad for the environment.
Rhode Island Stormwater Solutions reports, “It might not seem like a stormwater problem, but animal waste is one of the many seemingly small sources of pollution that can add up to big problems for water quality, and even human health.”
That’s because it contains nutrients and pathogens that pollute the water. This pollution can make it unsafe to swim, drink, or even fish in a waterway. Hence local ordinances that require pet owners to pick up their dog’s poop.
“I teach a whole mini section about it to middle schoolers at my job when they come to learn about the importance of protecting our watersheds,” a woman named Elle commented on Pond’s post.
Instant karma for the dog owner
As it turns out, Pond didn’t merely confront the woman to try to get her to pick up the dog poop. She was stalling.
In a follow-up post, Pond says that they called the cops as soon as they saw her.
“We tried to keep her there by me running out and confronting her,” she says.
The police, she says, fined the woman $500. Then they added a special punishment.
“She also had to pick up all the poop in the entire yard,” Pond says. “So I thought that was pretty funny.”
“We did not record that because the cop said no,” she laments.
People love that the story has a happy ending.
“Best update ever ?” wrote one.
Another added, “This video gave me the instant gratification I was looking for.”
Many people are disappointed that there is no video evidence of the special punishment.
“Yup, would have recorded anyways, it’s public!!” one said.
Pond didn’t immediately respond to a direct message seeking comment.
