'It's 2020, put it back': Hilarity as 'mysterious' sea creature washes up on Edinburgh beach

In what feels like peak 2020 news, a Facebook user kicked off a whole lot of hilarity in a local foraging group after posting a picture of a 'mysterious' sea creature found on the shores of an Edinburgh beach.

The Edinburgh local wrote: "We found a couple of these strange creatures washed up at Granton beach. Out of curiosity rather than culinary interest (we put them back in the sea) - Does anyone know what they are?"

One fellow forager was quick to respond that "It's 2020. Whatever it is, don't eat it, put it back, forget you ever saw it."

However, the 'weird' looking sea beastie is in fact a sea mouse, a strange furry creature often found washed ashore after storms.

The wee creature is in fact a type of worm and spends its life hunting small crabs and other worms on the seabed.

Dubbed 'the lesser seen fluffy sea nope' by another member of the Edinburgh and Lothians foragers group, the sea mouse is in fact commonly found on UK beaches.

It's proper name is Aphrodita - and the species is in fact named after the Greek Goddess of Love, although we wouldn't rush to give one of these beasties as a gift to woo someone anytime soon.

Have you ever seen a sea mouse on a local beach? Let us know in the comments.
