'It may lower our house price': Locals livid that Riley's Fish Shack wants to build 5ft box

It is officially one of the best restaurants on Earth.

But plans to build a 5ft high black box near Riley's Fish Shack have left a nasty taste in some locals' mouths.

The award-winning restaurant, located on Tynemouth's stunning King Edward's Bay, wants permission to build an electricity cabinet at the top of the steps leading onto the beach.

But neighbours in one of Tyneside's most prestigious postcodes fear the "eyesore" would spoil their views - and even harm house prices.

"It will directly impact on the outlook from my property which is currently the wonderful views of the North Sea and Tynemouth Priory," claimed an objector.

"To have this view spoiled by a black electricity box which will be higher than the existing boundary fence will frankly be a blot on the landscape."

The cabinet - branded a "public nuisance" by one local - would be erected on East Street's pavement between the steps and the Gibralter Rock pub.

But objectors claims that the proposed location is "totally arbitrary and unnecessary".

They claim it could be built below street level or even adjacent to Riley's itself.

The popular restaurant, nominated for best ‘Off Map Destination' in the recent World Restaurant Awards, claims it needs the box to support upgrade work.

But a planning application to North Tyneside Council's received half a dozen objections from locals living in the likes of King Edward House and Priors House.

One wrote: "It would result in our visual intrusion - which reflects on the price of our properties."

ChronicleLive repeatedly contacted both Riley's Fish Shack - including their office -  and its agent Harland Architecture about the plans.

The restaurant is currently closed until "further notice" for renovations.

Since opening, it has gained an enormous fanbase while earning a string of awards and plaudits.

In a glowing review, famous food critic Jay Rayner wrote: "Put away the guide books. I have found the eating experience of the year."

But while the food is a hit, not everyone is a fan of the 5ft box.

"It will directly impact on the outlook from my property which is currently the wonderful views of the North Sea and Tynemouth Priory, which was the sole reason I moved to this property in the first place," wrote another objector.
