'It looked to me that Notts County should have had a penalty' - Woking boss makes spot-kick admission

Woking manager Alan Dowson was delighted with his side’s performance as the Cardinals drew with Notts County.

He admitted that he thought the hosts should have been awarded a penalty when Callum Roberts went down in the box with the score at 1-1 late on in the second half.

But he felt the Cards should have also been awarded a spot-kick themselves when Godfrey Poku went down under a challenge from Richard Brindley.

Dowson said: “I thought we should have had a penalty and I thought we had the better chances in the game.

"What a performance coming here. We fought them on the beaches and played well.

“We deserved what we got and we deserved a win. We had some unbelievable chances, but it looked to me that Notts County should have had a penalty to be honest.”

Comfortably in control after a Max Kretschmar’s 50th-minute goal, Dowson was disappointed that his side allowed Kristian Dennis to equalise just 20 minutes later.

“I was disappointed, but it was more pleasing that we stuck in it.

“It didn’t look as though they were going to score another and we had our best chance with the free header towards the end. Not many teams come to Notts County and create chances like we did.”

Downson said he was proud of his team for matching the Magpies in strength.

“We’ve been a soft touch in the last couple of months away from home. We’ve lost the last seven on the road and became soft. My players had some steel about them and that’s how we have to continue.”

Ben Dempsey, who is  on loan from Championship club Charlton Athletic, made his debut at Meadow Lane and his manager praised the 20-year-old’s performance.

“He still has to find his feet in our league,” he said.

“It is a little bit different to the league he’s played in. Here he’s on top of things all the time.”

A visit to Meadow Lane showcased just how far his side have come and Dowson praised Notts and highlighted the progress that Woking have made.

“It’s a lovely place," he said.

"I said to the lads before kick-off that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in non-league football but here.

"It’s the biggest club that has ever played non-league football in my opinion. The stadium is the biggest and the best. Who would not want to play here.”
