'It is unacceptable, unjustifiable, wrong, hurtful and embarrassing' - Stewart Donald condemns sick Gary Speed 'fan' video

Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald has revealed he is 'absolutely gutted' after a video was posted of social media showing a small number of Black Cats fans singing a song about Gary Speed.

The former Newcastle United, Everton, Leeds and Bolton midfielder took his own life in 2011 on a day which shocked football.

The post has been condemned by the vast majority of Sunderland supporters and we will not give it any more coverage by reproducing it here.

Donald was alerted to the post by fans on twitter, and offered his full and frank verdict, while suggesting he would take action against the people involved.

"It is shocking," he tweeted.

"I have seen it and I absolutely gutted. It is unacceptable, unjustifiable, wrong, hurtful and embarrassing.

"Gary Speed’s poor family deserve support and understanding and to abuse such a tragic event is simply wrong and sick.

"I’m sorry and I’m on it."

The people in the video have been named on social media.

Our Sunderland writer James Hunter also took to twitter today to add his view, writing: "These people singing vile abuse about Gary Speed are not representative of Sunderland supporters and I hope they are banned for life. They won’t be missed."
