The Byker community is in shock after a woman died after falling from a 14-storey block of flats.
The woman, who has not yet been named, died on Monday evening after an incident at Grafton House.
Northumbria Police say the 44-year-old was unresponsive when officers arrived.
On Tuesday morning, there were no flowers or tributes placed at the scene.
Instead there was a sombre mood among those living near the high rise flats which dominate Byker's skyline.
Parents on the school run stopped at the flats to pay their silent respects to the woman.
Others spoke of their heartbreak and shock.
Michael Jones, 68, lives in the adjacent Molineux Court which were the scene of a similar tragedy when another woman fell to her death last May .
He said: "It is just sad.
"It is someone's bairn at the end of the day.
An inquest is now expected to be held into the woman's death, which for one local, hit home harder than most.
"It breaks you heart," said Stephen Rook.
The 28-year-old has lived in Newcastle's East End all of his life.
When he heard the news someone fell from the flats on Monday, it brought back his own battles with mental health.
"I've thought about it when I've been low, but you just can't go ahead with it unless you are in a really low place," said Stephen, who currently lives in nearby Heaton Park Road.
"I know a lot of people in those flats, and it hits home.
"And it just shows you don't know what is going on in people's heads."
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At around 5.45pm yesterday we received a call from the ambulance service regarding concern for a female at Grafton House.
"Police and emergency services attended to find an unresponsive female.
"The 44-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"There is not believed to be any third party involvement. A report has been prepared for the coroner."
