'It is abhorrent': Gateshead FC match almost called off after rival player is racially abused

A Gateshead FC match was almost abandoned after a rival player was subjected to "vile" racist abuse.

Saturday's clash with Guiseley AFC was marred when a mystery fan hurled sickening taunts towards the Yorkshire-based club's striker Gabriel Johnson.

ChronicleLive understands the 23-year-old was called an 'albino'.

Gateshead FC has condemned the slur and a club spokesperson said: "Racism and discrimination of any kind is abhorrent, and has no place whatsoever within football and society as a whole.

"No individual should travel to the sanctuary of a football match only to be subjected to such vile and inexcusable abuse."

The referee stopped the game in the first half after a complaint from the forward, who was on the books of Manchester United as a teenager.

Both managers were addressed and an announcement made through the PA that the game would be scrapped if the abuse continued.

The National League fixture resumed and ended 2-2. However, Gateshead confirmed the ugly incident has been reported to the FA.

"We are in constant contact with Guiseley AFC in this regard to determine the person responsible, as well as being in contact with Kick It Out today," added the spokesperson.

However, the clubs face an uphill battle trying to find the culprit, as the fixture at Guiseley's Nethermoor Park ground was unsegregated - meaning it isn't known which team the abuser was supporting.

ChronicleLive contacted the Yorkshire club several times but received no response.

A Gateshead spokesperson added: "Gateshead Football Club vehemently condemns racist and discriminatory abuse, and swift yet strong action will be taken if necessary.

"Gateshead Football Club is proud to welcome individuals from all walks of life, and we will not stand by and allow incidents such as this to mar our sport."
