It has officially been the hottest day ever in Nottingham - and temperatures are still rising

Forecasters have said it has officially been the hottest day in Nottingham since records began.

The Met Office confirmed that, as of around 3pm, temperatures of 34.9C were recorded at Watnall weather station, which covers Nottingham.

The highest temperature previously recorded, stretching back to 1948 when records began, was 34.6°C, on August 3, 1990.

At around 3.30pm, The Met Office said "temperatures are climbing" in Nottingham.

At the time of the 34.9C reading, Nottingham's reading was higher than the 33.4C recorded at Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, and 34.1C at Coton-in-the-Elms, south Derbyshire.

The reading at Watnall was also higher than 30.8C recorded at Leek, Thorncliffe, west of Nottingham, and 34.4C in north-west Sheffield.

Temperatures of 34C were recorded at East Midlands Airport earlier in the day.

Readings for the county are expected to be revealed later on.

Nationally, the Met Office has said temperatures in London reached 37.7C - topping the previous record of 36.6 on July 1, 2015.

The hot weather caused widespread disruption.

East Midlands Trains warned passengers not to travel on the network today with heat-related speed restrictions imposed across the network.

There were also delays to trams, too.

The last two races were cancelled at Southwell Race Course this afternoon "in the interests of the welfare of equine and human participants".

Meanwhile, nothing on the grill menu was served at two of the city's Wetherspoon pubs due to "excessive heat in the kitchens".

And fridges have failed a Tesco supermarket because of the scorching weather.
