'It has got potential' - Charlie Nicholas delivers his verdict on the Newcastle United takeover reports

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has delivered his verdict on the potential takeover at Newcastle United.

The proposed takeover deal of the Magpies is now understood to be in the hands of the Premier League.

The club have maintained their "no comment" status on all enquiries, but the group looking to broker a buyout remain confident that they will be able to confirm the deal soon.

There's no timeline on the announcement yet, but it's understood Amanda Staveley's group has exclusivity until the middle of May.

Since the news first broke, there have been numerous reports linking the club with new players and a manager.

Stars like Philippe Coutinho and Kalidou Koulibaly have been linked, while a report from France recently claimed talks between Mauricio Pochettino and Toon chiefs were at a "very advanced" stage.

And while Nicholas can see why the club’s fans are getting excited with the news, he is hoping Steve Bruce is given the chance to build something with the new investment.

He told Sky Sports: “Well it is getting interesting, isn’t it? What I would personally prefer when the takeover happens is they give Steve Bruce a chance.

“He has done a stunning job and what could he do if he was given some money to build.

“I think they have got to consolidate and then see where they are. Pochettino’s name has been linked, then there has been talk about massive buying potential for everything.

“But I think the market is going through a phase where prices and wages and how you get the fair play balance in football is now under scrutiny.

“I think Newcastle fans at the moment are thinking we have had a good season, let's get the season complete, we don’t look like we are under any stress or strain.

“But they will be so excited and it has got potential. You know the one thing that is guaranteed if these guys get in and control it is that they have plenty of money to go at it.

“But my personal opinion on that would be it does take two or three years to develop because the level of the top two, Liverpool and Man City, is just so high and so way about everybody else.”
