Sometimes, a movie changes your life. And then you can one day see a sequel to that movie that will always rewire your brain. And now one of the best legacy sequels around has turned one and lets celebrate it!
The summer of 2024 was dubbed “Glen Powell Summer” for one reason: Twisters. Powell starred as Tyler Owens, the Tornado Wrangler, who uses his YouTube following to help earn money and show what you can and cannot do in a tornado. He meets Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) as she works with Storm Par and the rest is romantic comedy history.
When it was announced that director Lee Isaac Chung and writer Mark L. Smith were going to make a sequel to the 1996 film Twister, a lot of fans asked why. I was one of them. It wasn’t a necessary sequel, or so I thought. And I am happy to be wrong about it. Because Twisters became my entire personality for the last year and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
Released on July 19th, 2024, Twisters allowed us to see a new group of storm chasers take on tornados. The original cast of Twisters wasn’t dismissed, they just were not part of the story and I think that’s why this movie works.
You can still love the original while enjoying the sequel
As someone who loves Twister a lot, saying that you can love both movies for different reasons feels sacrilegious but it is the truth. They are very different from one another and that’s what makes them so special to me. Two different kind of stories about love and natural disasters? Perfection.
The original film is more a disaster movie with a bit of love twisted in. Bill (Bill Paxton) and Jo (Helen Hunt) have to deal with their past relationship in order to survive the storm they’re currently in and seeing if Jo’s science worked out. With Tyler and Kate, the two have a meet-cute, have all the classic rom-com beats, and the tornado is kind of their join hyper-fixation.
Look, a movie that features a “it’s beautiful” scene with the woman looking at something else and the man looking at her is my definition of a romantic comedy and that literally happens in Twisters! And a year later, this movie still has consumed me.
So if you have not yet watched Tyler and Kate navigate tornados in Oklahoma, why not celebrate one year of Twisters by finally watching it? You can’t go see it in 4DX anymore but hey, at least you can experience the magic.
