It got 'a bit wild' at The Ivy... man in wheelchair hurls poles at door of upmarket Spinningfields restaurant

This is the moment a man in a wheelchair and a woman hurled poles and a plant pot at the doors of upmarket restaurant The Ivy.

Staff at the restaurant, in Spinningfields, said the pair were blocking the entrance to the doorway and responded aggressively when they were asked to move.

In a video clip filmed by a witness on Tuesday, August 13, the pair can be heard screaming at The Ivy doormen.

The man in the wheelchair picks up a gold stanchion attached to a rope and chucks it towards the front door.

He picks it up again and attempts to smash the glass, while The Ivy staff, dressed in the restaurant's trademark pale green jackets, cower behind the door.

The pair can be heard shouting "You started it though", before the woman picks up a concrete plant pot and throws it towards the doorway.

Staff emerge from the doorway to quickly collect the stanchions and move them inside for safety.

Outside the doorway, smashed-up plant pots and flowers can be seen strewn across the floor.

The doormen can be seen tussling with the couple who continue to scream.

After the clip the pair then left the scene.

A diner, who witnessed the incident, said: "He started screaming 'You won't let me in because I am disabled'.

"I love The Ivy, they are good people, they wouldn't actively not let someone in because they are disabled. He was probably using it as an excuse for his behaviour.

"It was a bit wild. I was in Manchester for two days on business, everything was great and then that happened.

"It was more disappointing than anything. There has been property damage to The Ivy. The guys were doing their best to try and calm him down but he was not having it."

A spokeswoman for The Ivy Collection said: “On August 13, there was a minor incident outside our Manchester Spinningfields restaurant where two people were blocking the doorway and became aggressive when asked to move by our staff.

"The incident was resolved quickly and there were no further issues. We take the health and safety of all our guests and staff very serious."

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 11.30pm on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, police were called to reports of a disturbance at the Ivy, Spinningfields.

"Enquiries have since established that a man was assaulted. No arrests have been made enquiries remain ongoing."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number 3413 of 13/08/19. Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
