As the spread of the new coronavirus continues to add to the time many people spend teleworking, new kinds of support for employees are spreading in the IT industries.
Gree Inc., will provide subsidies of up to 3,000 yen per person per month for "online drinking parties" using internet video conferencing. The company wants employees to communicate informally with each other even while working at home.
Mercari, Inc., the provider of a major flea market app, will offer a uniform 60,000 yen allowance for teleworking and to allow people to buy exercise equipment.
Mixi, Inc., a major social networking site, will also pay up to 22,000 yen to set up a telework environment, including desks and keyboards.
In addition, GMO Internet, Inc., which has implemented telecommuting since late January, plans to return the savings to its employees. The savings have resulted from reduced energy bills due to a smaller number of people physically coming to work.
"Telework is expected to expand further, and this movement makes sense," said Yuji Kobayashi, chief researcher at Persol Research and Consulting Co.
