'It doesn't help anyone' - Liverpool confirm Loris Karius talks as exit message sent

Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has outlined the club’s plan regarding Loris Karius’ future.

The Reds stopper has not made a first-team appearance since the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev against Real Madrid.

Two high-profile errors led to Liverpool bringing Alisson Becker to Anfield that summer from Roma, who has since been the established first-choice goalkeeper.

Karius has had loan stints with Besiktas and Union Berlin, but has been back at Liverpool since last summer.

His contract with the Reds is set to expire at the end of the season, but it is believed Liverpool would be willing to part ways before then.

Speaking to The Athletic, Achterberg confirmed that stance by admitting Karius’ current situation “doesn’t help anyone”.

Achterberg went on to explain that, should Karius depart this month, then the club would look to promote one of the younger goalkeepers up to the first team.

“In the end it’s down to him, his agent and the club to try to find a solution,” Achterberg is quoted telling The Athletic .

“Hopefully, there will be one this month.

“It doesn’t help anyone to sit for another six months without the feeling that you are really fighting for something. That’s not going to improve him.

“He needs to use his quality to make a career now. Loris has a lot of good qualities.

“If not, he will train with us until the end of his contract. If Loris goes, then we will look to bring one up from the academy again.”
