A mother of two was going through a normal day when she says she found something shocking in her baby’s diaper.
According to @thriftymami, she was changing her nine-month-old son’s Pampers Swaddlers when she found a shard of glass inside.
“I just found glass in my baby’s diaper. It cut me, actually, when I was changing his diaper,” she says. “When I opened the new one’s straps, I felt something go into my skin.”
In a TikTok documenting her experience, @thriftymami holds a pair of tweezers, clutching what looks to be a tiny piece of glass, then shows a small cut on the palm of her hand.
She says it was from a brand-new pack of Pampers Swaddlers.
“I don’t really know what’s going on,” the creator concludes. “Super scary and I will definitely be looking for other brands to buy from.”
In the caption, she adds that she bought the diapers in California this month. She also includes a close-up of a code that’s printed on the diaper, presumably to identify the batch and manufacturing facility it came from.
Her tale has parents, particularly those who have infants, frightened and outraged at Pampers. “Why is Pampers ALWAYS having quality issues?” wondered one concerned commenter.
Since @thriftymami posted about her experience on July 20, her TikTok has been viewed over 3.6 million times.
Procter & Gamble, the maker of Pampers, didn’t respond to an emailed inquiry sent Tuesday morning.
Multiple allegations of glass in diapers
Manufacturing mistakes happen. This is perhaps particularly true if a company makes massive volumes of a product. For instance, Procter & Gamble’s Pampers brand diapers are worn by 25 million babies across 100 countries every single day, per Forbes.
But there’s a lot of daylight between, say, a dented can and an allegation of finding glass in a diaper.
For many, @thriftymami’s experience is even more chilling because this isn’t the first time in recent weeks a mom has claimed to find glass in a Pampers diaper.
“If I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen a video on glass in Pampers diapers, I’d have 2 nickels,” wrote on. “Which isn’t a lot, but its weird it’s happened twice.”
“I saw a few after Googling!” @thriftymami replied. “One actually cut her baby :(“
Another person said five people have claimed they found glass in a Pampers diaper. The Mary Sue found multiple videos making this allegation circulating online.
What’s next?
In a follow-up post, @thriftymami says she reported the diaper incident to Procter & Gamble. The company is purportedly looking into it.
She says that Procter & Gamble has continued to correspond with her.
“…[T]hey said they were sending $65 debit card, which I declined but they said they sent it already,” she writes in a comment. “They said they’re also sending a mailer to collect the diaper to investigate.”
The mother of two is also switching diaper brands. The creator actually had a software engineer friend compile diaper recommendations from the thousands of comments and rank them in order of prevalence.
The top five brands people recommended instead of Pampers are Rascals, Millie Moon, Up, Cloth, and Honest. Kirkland and Target also made the top 10.
Rascals appears to have seized on its competitor’s negative publicity.
In a comment, it offered to partner with @thriftymami to give away a three-month supply of diapers.
“YAY! This is amazing. Can’t wait!!!” she replied.
@thriftymami Found a piece of glass in my baby’s Pampers Swaddler Size 6, purchased in the last month in California. What do I do?? Does anybody have any other diaper recommendations? ? #momsoftiktok ♬ original sound – thriftymami
