'It could've easily been 3-3' - Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips' verdict on Newcastle's FA Cup win

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips feels his former club West Brom were 'very unlucky' to lose out to Newcastle in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday.

Steve Bruce's side booked their place in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006 as a brace from Miguel Almiron and Valentino Lazaro's first goal for the club fired the Magpies into a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Baggies hit back with goals from Matt Phillips and Kenneth Zohore but they were rendered a mere consolation as they failed to find an equaliser to force extra-time.

And Phillips, who was covering the game at the Hawthorns, 'guarantees' West Brom would have grabbed an equaliser had the game carried on for a further five minutes.

"They never give up, did they?" Phillips told BBC Radio 5Live.

"I said to you on commentary that if it went to 3-0 it would be game over but they typified their manager, they never gave up and it could have easily been 3-3.

"West Brom carved out many opportunities in the second half and that coincided actually when Almiron come off the pitch.

"The dynamic of Newcastle changed, the threat changed and West Brom were by far the better team in the second half.

"So you have to say they were very unlucky. Another five minutes of this game, I guarantee it would have been 3-3."
