It could snow in Greater Manchester this weekend

There could be snowfall this weekend in Greater Manchester, forecasters have predicted.

The Met Office has warned that the weather will get colder across the UK over the next few days as we head into December.

Temperatures are forecast to be around 5C and with the colder conditions will come wintry showers, hail, sleet, and snow.

However a spokesperson for the Met Office has said snow is likely to be transient, with only a risk of it setting in higher areas.

Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesman, told the M.E.N: “Increasingly we will see colder conditions become established across the UK with a mixture of overnight frosts and wintry showers, including hail, sleet and snow.

“At lower levels, snow is expected to be transient, but at higher elevations – say above 200-300 metres in areas like the Peak District – there is a risk of it settling and creating more difficult conditions on trans-Pennine routes.

“These cold conditions are expected to last into the early part of next week, when milder weather from the Atlantic will push the cold conditions aside.”

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, added: “Although we’re going to see a few days with colder conditions, we shouldn’t be surprised that the start of winter brings a brief spell of wintry weather.

"Some parts of the UK, especially northern hills, may see snow, but for many this will only be short lived.  We’ll be monitoring the forecast and we will issue warnings accordingly.”

These unsettled conditions are likely to persist into the weekend with further periods of strong winds, heavy rain and wintry showers. How long the cold conditions persists is currently uncertain, but looks likely to continue into early next week.
