'It brings the whole area down' - Sutton residents fed up of overgrown alleyway

Residents of Sutton-in-Ashfield say they are fed up with the the state of a "vile" nearby alleyway that has been overgrown for some time.

The alleyway that connects Milldale Walk and Davies Avenue is overgrown with weeds, berry bushes and nettles that are obstructing parts of the walkway.

Those who live on roads near the alley say it often has an unpleasant smell that they think is the result of dog waste being left there.

NottinghamshireLive spoke to people who live nearby and those passing through.

Natalie Wright, a resident of Milldale Walk said: "It's vile. It always smells down there and it's full of rubbish and dog poo. Some owners will bag their dog's mess and throw it under the overgrown bushes so the smell can be awful.

"Because we live so near to it, the mess from people using it often comes near our house which shouldn't be happening."

The 34-year-old mental health nurse said: "It lets the whole area down because it is lovely here. The other side of the alleyway is quite rough and I think it would be better if it was blocked off."

Another resident of Milldale Walk also spoke out about the state of the alleyway.

Joyce Blinkhorn, 78, said: "It's terrible and always overgrown. You see lots of rubbish down there and it annoys me because we keep things tidy on this side. We don't get much trouble here but that alleyway really brings it down.

"I've seen shopping trolleys left there and bags filled with rubbish that people leave there.

"When I used to go into town, I would avoid that shortcut because it feels unsafe and I would not go down it at night at all. It doesn't seem worth it when you can barely see to the other side."

Data on the FixMyStreet website showed how .

A passer-by who uses the alleyway to access an allotment behind the hedge said the problems in the alleyway have spilled over into the path to his allotment.

Keith Richards, 62, said: "I have an allotment that is accessed from the alleyway and the overgrowth has come through to there meaning you can't walk through it properly. It's really quite bad and from the state of it you can tell that that it probably isn't even tidied up once a year."

A spokesperson for Ashfield District Council said: "A resident contacted us at the end of last week requesting the overhanging branches along the pathway between Edale Court and Davies Avenue be cut back.

"A priority job request was raised and we are carrying out the work tomorrow (September 3)."
