It Asda be stolen: See footage of sneaky thief stealing supermarket van while driver makes delivery

This is the moment a drug addict steals an Asda delivery van while the driver is dropping off shopping to a customer.

Opportunistic thief Paul Phythian spotted the truck with a key in the ignition in Felling, Gateshead, and decided to help himself.

But on-board cameras on the vehicle caught him in the act and he didn't get very far before crashing into a fence.

Cruel son who spent severely brain-damaged mum's £260,000 compensation said it's what she wanted

A court heard a 15-year-old had to jump out of the way of the van as it weaved its way down the road in the hands of intoxicated Phythian.

He caused £4,500 of damage to the vehicle by crashing it, while £50 of food was spoiled.

Now the 45-year-old, who admitted aggravated vehicle taking and theft, has been jailed for 14 months at Newcastle Crown Court.

The incident happened in Felling, Gateshead, on August 26 last year around 5pm.

The driver thought it was safe to leave the key in the ignition briefly while he made the delivery.

Sentencing Phythian, Judge Amanda Rippon said: "You, in an opportunistic way, got into the van and tried to start it.

"You had problems getting it in gear and he returned to the van and tried to persuade and pull you out but he couldn't do either.

"You got the vehicle in gear and started driving."

The Asda worker had to take evasive action as Phythian drove off.

Judge Rippon said: "You weaved your way down the road, plainly intoxicated.

"A 15-year-old had to jump out of your way as you drove off down the road."

Phythian was arrested after crashing the van nearby.

The court heard the delivery driver was left shocked and upset by the risk he and others were put in by Phythian and he was distressed.

Phythian was on a conditional discharge at the time and is currently serving another prison sentence for burglary.

As well as the jail term, he was disqualified from driving for 19 months.

The court heard he spent time in care as a child, has long term difficulties and suffers anxiety and depression related to his drug and alcohol misuse from an early age.

Judge Rippon said he appears to be becoming institutionalised in prison, where he has been working as a mentor and cleaner.
