'It all just went up': Footage emerges of Sunderland AFC and Coventry City fans fighting in pub

Coventry fans have been blamed after a pub brawl broke out between Sunderland AFC and Coventry City supporters.

Footage shared online shows yobs throwing punches as police officers bravely step in to try and calm the chaos.

Coventry City beat the Black Cats in a 5-4 classic.

A witness to the pub brawl, inside The Wheatsheaf, pointed the finger at Coventry City fans - accusing them of starting the fight.

"The whole place went up like that, but everything was sorted out," said a staff member at the Roker Avenue boozer.

"The police were there fairly quickly but it was the Coventry fans who were at fault."

The employee added the troublemakers were removed "straight away".

The clip has now been viewed over 60,000 times on Twitter.

Online, fans slammed those involved.

One Tweeted:  "Not what (football) is about."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said while there have been Football fans arrested after Sunderland supporters injured in Stadium of Light disorder , none yet relate to the pub incident.

Previously, match commander Chief Inspector Jamie Pitt slammed the troublemakers whose actions blighted an incredible game of football.

"There is absolutely no place in football for this sort of behaviour and we are working closely with both clubs to help locate those responsible and we will take action on anyone found to be involved," he said, adding a "small minority" had spoilt the day for many.

A spokesperson from Sunderland AFC also pointed blame at the "disrespectful behaviour of many away fans".

The spokesperson said: "SAFC and Northumbria Police had been in contact with both Coventry and its fans group ahead of the game, acknowledging that there would likely be some sort of protest, and trying to ensure that the match could go ahead in a safe and respectful environment for both sets of fans.

"That turned out not to be the case, with Sunderland fans in the lower tier of the North Stand being subjected to projectiles thrown from the upper tier, where away fans were housed.

"Several Sunderland fans were either injured by the projectiles or had property damaged by smoke bombs thrown from above.

"There were numerous other offences committed, all of which were especially disappointing given Sunderland AFC 's willingness to speak to Coventry fans ahead of the game.

"In response, Sunderland fans demonstrated admirable restraint in the circumstances, for which the club is grateful."

One man has been charged with breaching a football banning order, two men were charged with public order offences and three men were released under common law with two men facing no further action.



Five further people were ejected for breach of ground regulations.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 382 13/04/19.
