'It all happened very fast': Kangaroo knocks Olympic mountain bike rider off Stromlo track

Canberra mountain bike cross country racer Rebecca McConnell.

Olympic cross-country mountain bike rider Rebecca McConnell was "very lucky" while racing at Mt Stromlo this week, after a surprise visitor knocked her off the path.

McConnell posted to Instagram after the incident. Luckily, McConnell wasn't badly injured but said she was very lucky to escaped with just a few cuts and scrapes.

"I was racing the local road Criterium and one of the locals (Kangaroo) decided to jump onto the track. Next second I was sliding on the road. It all happened very fast," the Instagram story read.

"I think I will be very sore tomorrow. But very lucky," she wrote.

McConnell is among the Australians preparing to head to Japan for the 2021 Olympic Games, which are due to begin in July 2024.

McConnell has represented Australia at the games twice previously. In September 2019, McConnell took out bronze in the Mountain Bike World Championships.

She will be among the Australian athletes who will receive the COVID-19 jab before heading offshore.

Sport Minister Senator Richard Colbeck confirmed to The Canberra Timesthis week that plans were in place for athletes to be vaccinated head of the games.
