Istanbul Basaksehir 2-1 Man Utd: Demba Ba inspires upset as sloppy United defending punished in Turkey

Manchester United’s perfect start to their Champions League campaign came to an end as Demba Ba led Istanbul Basaksehir to a surprise 2-1 victory in Turkey.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle striker took advantage of some laughable United defending to open the scoring and his clever dummy teed up Edin Visca to make it two.

Anthony Martial’s header halved the deficit almost immediately but United - who had beaten PSG and RB Leipzig in their first two group games - could not find a leveller against the Turkish champions, who picked up their first points of the campaign.

United fell behind after 12 minutes when Visca found Demba Ba with a long pass in acres of space and the striker ran forward before knocking the ball past goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Basaksehir doubled their lead five minutes before halftime after Deniz Turuc nicked the ball from Juan Mata and passed to Ba who set up Visca to score.

Anthony Martial's header two minutes later gave United hope but despite enjoying plenty of possession in the second half, they were unable to break down the Turkish side's disciplined defence.

United remain top of Group H with six points from three matches and Basaksehir have three and Leipzig host PSG later on Wednesday.
