An elderly woman from central Israel was arrested by Israel's internal security agency, Shin Bet, on suspicion of plotting to kill Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
That's according to reports by the country’s Israeli public broadcaster, KAN, who said on Wednesday that the plot reportedly involved an "explosive device."
The woman, identified only as being an anti-government activist in her 70s due to a court gag order, was arrested two weeks ago, but was released on the condition she stay away from all government buildings and from approaching the prime minister.
An indictment will be filed against her on Thursday for conspiring to commit a crime and conspiring to carry out a terrorist act, KAN reported.
Israeli police say the woman "was in contact with other people as part of this plan."
She is currently being investigated by Shin Bet and the agency will charge her with "conspiracy to carry out a terrorist act."
Previous assassination attempt
Last September, the Israeli news website Walla revealed an Israeli citizen had been arrested suspected of communicating with Iran and planning to "assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as other security officials."
According to local media, "Iranian intelligence recruited this Israeli citizen to target Netanyahu, then Defence Minister Yoav Galant, as well as the former head of the Shin Bet Ronen Bar."
According to a joint statement by Shin Bet and the police, the suspect was arrested in August "after it was confirmed that he had established contacts with Iranian intelligence while in Turkey."
"The detainee, an Israeli businessman, crossed the border into Iran, where he met with representatives of those services," the statement said.
And last October, Netanyahu’s residence in Caesarea was targeted by a drone, believed to have been launched from Lebanon.
That attack didn't result in any injuries and Netanyahu was not at his residence at the time of the attack.
