Israeli Official Dodges Question on Why Journalists Are Not Allowed in Gaza: 'When the War Is Over You'll Know Everything'

An Israeli official avoided a question about the ban on international journalists entering Gaza, as Israeli forces continue targeting Palestinian reporters, killing at least 227 since Oct. 7, 2023.

Israeli Equality Minister May Golan appeared on "Piers Morgan Uncensored" on Tuesday, where she was questioned about previous remarks, specifically her statement expressing she was "proud of the ruins in Gaza." Golan stood by her comment, asserting that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is "the most moral army in the world" and insisting that the IDF is not targeting innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip.

"You tell me, what do we need to do when Hamas terrorists are hiding behind human people, behind schools, underground of hospitals, what do we need to do?" she asked.

Morgan responded, "You know the first thing you could do? You could lift the ban that the Israeli government has put on international journalists going into Gaza so that all the claims that you make, which always blame Hamas for absolutely everything, could be verified by independent journalists. Why don't you do that?" He continued, "Why for 20 months have you banned international media from going into Gaza, an unprecedented ban for any modern warfare. Why have you done this?"

Golan began her response by claiming that Israeli soldiers are not trained to shoot in bursts, prompting Morgan to question the relevance of that point to the issue of media access.

"You would agree with me that if the IDF would have shot in bursts, Gaza would have been a parking lot in 12 hours," Golan said.

"Gaza is a parking lot," Morgan interjected, pointing out that 70% of the territory has already been destroyed. Golan laughed in response.

Golan then stated, "The IDF has declared that the Gaza Strip is a very dangerous combat zone, and there is a risk not just for the journalists to be harmed by the terrorists or by the IDF trying to eliminate the terrorists hiding behind the civilians, but for journalists to be kidnapped."

Morgan pressed further: "You talk about the IDF being the most moral army in the world," before referencing a recent report by Haaretz, an Israeli publication, which revealed that IDF soldiers had been instructed by commanders to deliberately target Palestinians, even in the absence of a threat, at four aid distribution sites operated in coordination with the United States. Since the opening of those centers, more than 600 Palestinians have been killed and more than 4,200 injured.

Responding to Golan's claim that journalist access would pose a security risk, Morgan argued, "It's not down to the IDF to decide whether the journalists are at risk. It's down to the journalists and their organizations, and if the journalists were there, they could verify exactly who was shooting who in the food lines because you just say, as you always do, everything is being done, every bad act in Gaza is being done by Hamas."

"Everybody else says, 'No, actually, the IDF is doing a lot of bad things too,' but the only way to really get to the bottom of this is to allow journalists through," Morgan added, noting that the only reporters currently able to document events in Gaza are Palestinian journalists, who, he pointed out, are being systematically targeted.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, at least 227 Palestinian journalists have been killed, including Hilmi al-Faqaawi, who burned to death when the IDF bombed a tent housing journalists; Hassan Aslih, who was receiving treatment at Nasser Hospital when he was killed by Israeli forces; and three journalists who were killed Thursday when Israeli forces bombed Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City.

"When the war is over, you'll know everything," Golan responded.
