An Israeli man accused of trying to smuggle 200kg of cocaine into Australia has faced a Brisbane court after being extradited from the Philippines.

Yaacov Amsalem, 50, is alleged to have been part of an organised crime syndicate involved in the global trade of illicit drugs and conspiring to import the drug into Australia in 2010.

The foreign national appeared by video link in the Brisbane Arrests Court on Tuesday for an extradition application to Sydney to stand trial.

The application was not opposed and he was remanded in custody to appear in the Tweed Heads Local Court on November 11.

Amsalem is charged with conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, conspiracy to traffic a commercial quantity of a controlled drug and conspiracy to deal in the proceeds of crime exceeding $1 million.

Amsalem's handover to Australian authorities is the second time in 32 years that someone has been extradited from the Philippines to Australia to face criminal charges.
